Yamagata produces 70% of Japan’s cherries, and the people live in harmony with the beautiful mountains counted among the 100 most famous in Japan, and beautiful nature including the Mogami River, in this “other Japan”.
As Matsuo Basho who traveled the "Oku no Hosomichi" reached for Dewa Sanzan, Yamagata has been honored as a place of spiritual culture since ancient times.
Yamagata is divided into Murayama, Mogami, Okitama (Oitama) and Shonai, and the culture such as dialect and food differs little by little due to the geography and the remnants of the Edo period's feudal system.

Human Shogi

In Tendo City, which produces the majority of shogi chess sets nationwide, professional shogi players play shogi using people dressed as armored warriors as shogi pieces at Mt. Maizuru with a backdrop of about 2,000 cherry blossoms in full bloom.

Sengoku (Warring States) Period Exhibition (Uesugi Museum)

A museum that presents the history of Yonezawa, a castle town dedicated to the Uesugi family. The "Sengoku (Warring States) Period Exhibition", a must-see for history fans, will display valuable historical materials and arts and crafts from across Japan from April 29 to June 18.
